On The Rocks
This is the standard way to drink Umeshu, which allows you to enjoy its pure flavor. Place a large piece of rock ice in a well-chilled glass and pour in the Umeshu.
You can enjoy the change in flavor as the ice melts and the alcohol content gradually decrease.
With Soda
If you feel the alcohol is too strong on the rocks, try mixing Umeshu with water or soda. When mixed with soda, the taste becomes refreshing and perfect for a mealtime drink. Add mint and lime to make a nice mojito-like drink. The recommended ratio of Umeshu to soda is 4 to 6.
With Hot Water
Warming Umeshu with hot water gently enhances its aroma.
Mix equal parts Umeshu and hot water, adjust to find your preferred ratio. The best temperature of the hot water is around 70ÅãC - this keeps the warmth without losing the alcohol content. Good for a nightcap or relaxation.
With Milk
Mix Umeshu with milk in a ratio of 1:2 (or 1:3) to create a thicker texture due to the acidity in Umeshu. Add Umeshu sparingly to prevent separation of Umeshu and milk (due to its acidity). Recommended to try with Kokutou Umeshu (made with Japanese brown sugar) or fruity Umeshu. It's easier to drink, so be careful not to overdo.
With Cola
Fill a glass with ice, pour 1 part Umeshu in, slowly add 1 part Cola and stir gently. The combination of the refreshing fizziness and the unique Cola flavor make this an addictive drink. Garnish with mint, lemon, or lime for an elegant cocktail. Try with Ginger Ale as an alternative.
With Tea
Recommended if you'd like to reduce the sweetness of Umeshu. Mix equal parts Umeshu and strong tea - it goes well with refreshing teas like black tea, jasmine tea, and green tea. Enjoy this tea cocktail cold in summer and warm in winter.
With Ice Cream
Turn vanilla ice cream into a fragrant, elegant dessert by pouring Umeshu over it. It pairs best with sweeter, thicker varieties, like Kokutou Umeshu, Nigori Umeshu, or Umeshu infused with fruits. Also enjoyed as a syrup for shaved ice.
